According
to the American Heart Association’s recently released results of two long-term
studies, sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) and artificially-sweetened beverages
(ASBs) pose long-term health risks, and are both associated with a higher risk
of death.

MubasharA.Choudry M.D., F.A.C.C., Chief Medical Officer, Washington
Cardiovascular Institute stated this ruling was based on two studies: the
Nurse’s Health Study (NHS) running from 1980 to 2014, and the Health Professional’s
Follow-up Study (HPFS) running from 1986-2014.
Mubashar Choudry - Say No to Coke |
And
while it may seem evident that the overconsumption of sugar is bad for you,
these studies shed light on the specific risks of SSBs and ASBs in terms of the overall risk of death, as well as the risk of death from cancer or cardiovascular
disease (CVD), said Dr. Mubashar Choudry.

SSBs
were found to have an association with a higher risk of death overall, a higher
risk of CVD death and a higher risk of cancer death. ASBs were found to have an
association with a higher overall risk of death and a higher risk of CVD death in
both studies, but only amongst subjects considered to have the highest ASB
consumption. ASBs were not associated with a risk of cancer mortality in either
study.
Dr. Mubashar A Choudry stated that
although the results of both studies seem to indicate that ASBs may be the
healthier option (or at least not quite as unhealthy as SSBs), and therefore the safer option for consumption, it would be wise, as with everything that could
heighten your risk of death and threaten your cardiovascular health, to consume
in moderation, if at all. After all, there’s always water!
